Episode 23: The Lottery


Today’s Easy Chair episode: The Lottery, Shirley Jackson’s classic tale about a small town’s annual lottery. As the villagers gather in the town square for this yearly ritual, the sense of unease grows. There’s the black box, the slips of paper…only one is marked, and everyone must take his or her chance. Not only is it jaw-droppingly shocking, it may just be my favorite short story ever.
